"Starting an Internet business is not
for everyone - so what can you do?"

As a business and marketing consultant I
talk toa lot of people and I'm surprised how
many of them think that the best way for
them to start a businessis on the Internet.

It is true that fortunes have been made and
will bemade by Internet entrepreneurs, but
there are big risks and big investments
involved. Just look at therecent decline in
the technology and dot.com sector.

And if you, like me, have been around the
Internet for a while you have surely seen
all the offers of business success on the
net by either using orselling a vast variety
of pre-packaged informationand other
online products.

I have tried some, but not all of them and
I'm suremost are legit and worthwhile
products. However, it seems to me that
unless you are in early in the life of the
program you end up fighting a saturated
market. And most of us are not lucky
enough to be there at the right time.

Clearly if you have a good idea for an
Internet business or some specialized
information you can sell on the net - go for
it! By all means try it and good luck to you!

If you think I'm not an Internet fan-think
again. I spend many hours on the web
every week and email is an integrated
part of my business. However the net is
not a place for everyone to start a new
business, but just to make it clear - I think
the Internet should be part of any
company's business plan.

"So what do you do if you want your own
business?"

You do what people have done since the
beginning of time- you do business the
old fashion way, face to face.

And you build it step by step from the
ground up.

First you need to figure out what you
have to sell.Is it a product or a service?

Then a bit of research should tell you if
the market is interested in what you have
to offer.

You should also get a sense of what your
potential competition is doing and how
that may affect your success.

If you are an employee and you new
business will be competing with you
current employer be sure to check that
you will not be violating any contractual
competition clause or other rules and
regulations.

These are just a few first, but important
steps and all it will take is a bit of you
time. Until you are happy with the
answers to these questions there is no
need or reason to spend any of your
hard earned money.

Obviously it takes a lot more to start a
new business, but it is a good start.

You'll need to do more planning, detailed
budgeting, gather more information and
ask more questions.

There are many "Start you own
business" books available and a lot of
the tools and the information you'll need
is available on the Internet.

One of the best things you can do is to
find a mentor. A businessperson who is
willing to help you step by step and who
can answer all your questions.

One last thing: "Don't ever give up
steady income until you new business
can replace it!" Even if it means working
double duty for a while.

Now - go get started on your own
business!
